Results

Each row shows one formula estimate in kg and lb, plus BMI-based ranges where available. This is general information, not a diagnosis. For personal advice, speak with a clinician.

How this calculator works

This calculator estimates an adult target-weight range using four classic formulas and a BMI-based target. Use it as a rough guide only. It cannot determine personal medical suitability.

Quick how-to

  1. Choose your unit system (cm and kg, or ft/in and lb).
  2. Enter your height and sex. Optionally adjust the Hamwi frame size and the target BMI.
  3. Press Calculate to view formula results, BMI target weight, and the BMI 18.5-24.9 range. Use the shareable URL to save or reopen the same settings.

Formulas shown

All calculations run in your browser, and entries are not sent to our servers. If you are pregnant, under 18, over about 65, very muscular, or have a medical condition, use these values only as rough reference and consult a health professional.

How to use this result

Use this page when you want a quick height-based reference range before you move to calorie planning or body-composition tools. Compare the classic formulas with your BMI target instead of treating any one number as the only correct goal.

Start with one reference

Pick the formula your clinician or school normally references, or start with BMI 22 if you just need a neutral midpoint. Then compare that result with the BMI 18.5 to 24.9 corridor shown below.

When to use another page instead

If you need current-weight screening, open the BMI calculator first. If you need calories or a date-based weight-loss plan, move to the calorie planner or BMR/TDEE page.

FAQ

What does ideal weight mean in this calculator?

It is a height-based target range. Formulas provide typical adult reference values, but they do not account for your full health context. Use results as a discussion starting point, not a strict rule.

Who is this tool designed for?

It is designed for adults around age 18 to 65 without major medical issues. It is not for children, teens, pregnancy, frail older adults, or active treatment cases. In those situations, consult a doctor or dietitian.

How do the Devine, Hamwi, Robinson and Miller formulas work?

Each formula starts at a base weight for 5 ft (about 152 cm), then adjusts by a fixed amount per inch. Devine and Robinson change more slowly, Hamwi includes frame-size adjustment, and Miller often gives higher values.

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?

No single formula is best for everyone. These methods come from older population data and simplify body-shape differences. If results disagree, focus on the overall range and compare it with your BMI and clinical advice.

How is the BMI target weight calculated?

BMI target weight equals height (m²) multiplied by your chosen BMI. The default is 22. The calculator also shows the weight range for BMI 18.5 to 24.9.

What BMI target should I choose?

Many adults are in the BMI 18.5 to 24.9 range, but the best target depends on health history, age, and goals. BMI 22 is a common midpoint reference. If unsure, consult a clinician.

Why does the tool limit height between 120 and 230 cm?

Formula reliability drops at extreme heights. The 120 to 230 cm range covers most adults. If your height is outside this range, treat results with extra caution.

Can I use this calculator for weight goals in children, teens or pregnancy?

No. Children, teens, pregnant people, and some older adults need specialist tools that consider age, trimester, and clinical context. Use pediatric, obstetric, or geriatric guidance instead.

How are my data stored and shared?

The calculator processes entries in your browser and does not send them to our servers. Recent runs can stay in local storage on your device. You can also copy a shareable URL to reopen the same settings.

Why do values sometimes change slightly when I switch units?

Metric and US units are converted with standard factors, then rounded to practical decimals. Small display differences can appear from rounding, while underlying values remain equivalent.
