Word & Character Counter

Text is processed in your browser. This app does not upload or save it. Copied statistics do not include your text.

Do not enter sensitive content. Browser extensions, input methods, and clipboard history are outside this app’s control.

Choose the language used for word segmentation. This does not translate your text.

Characters are Unicode grapheme clusters. Spaces and line breaks are included.

Lines include a final empty line. Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines.

Byte counts use the text shown here with LF line endings, not the original file.

An unavailable count is shown as a dash, not zero. No approximate word-count fallback is used.

Check the length of your text

  1. Paste plain text and select its language. The counter updates after you finish typing or composing characters.
  2. Set an optional limit in words or characters. The limit reports remaining space or excess; it never cuts your text.
  3. Open Estimated time to adjust the rates. Copy statistics to keep the numbers without copying the original text.

What these counts mean

Character counts use Unicode grapheme clusters, including whitespace and line breaks. The whitespace-free count removes only clusters made entirely of whitespace.

Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines, not every new line. Line counts include an empty final line after a trailing line break.

Code points, UTF-16 code units, and UTF-8 bytes are separate measurements. CRLF and CR line endings are counted as LF. No other normalization is applied.

Frequently asked questions

Why does another app show a different count?

Apps can use different character units, word boundaries, or line-ending rules. This counter uses Unicode grapheme clusters and browser word segmentation. It does not reproduce a specific word processor or social platform.

Can I count Japanese text?

Yes. Choose Japanese as the text language. The word count uses browser segmentation rather than splitting only at spaces. For writing limits, a character count may be more useful.

Do spaces and blank lines count?

The main character count includes whitespace and line breaks. The second excludes whitespace-only clusters. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by blank lines.

Are the reading and speaking times measured?

No. They divide the selected count by your chosen rate. The starting rates are editable examples, not language-specific averages. Content, numbers, and pauses can change actual time.

Is the text saved or uploaded?

The app processes it locally and does not save or upload it. Copy statistics excludes the original text. Browser extensions, input methods, and clipboard history remain outside the app’s control.

How much text can I count?

The analysis limit is 200,000 UTF-16 code units after line-ending normalization. Longer text stays in the field, but counting is suspended until it is shortened. A supplementary Unicode character uses two UTF-16 units.
